How Research Works — and How You Can Be Part of It
How Research Works
All studies are written to find out an important fact. Each study is then reviewed for volunteer safety by a group of professionals called an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Once approved, volunteers are recruited through a pre-screening process. Volunteers who qualify become participants by completing a review of the study and signing their agreement to follow it exactly as written — this is called Informed Consent. Before any procedures begin, each participant goes through a thorough screening process.
Types of Studies
The procedures in a study depend on the type of study:
- Interventional studies: An investigator randomly assigns participants to groups, performs a different treatment on each group, and compares the outcomes.
- Observational studies: An investigator collects information on health and disease from volunteers without performing a treatment — either as a single episode or by following the same participants over time to observe naturally occurring outcomes without interference.
Study results are compiled, evaluated to determine whether the study helped with the understanding of the original important fact, and then published to share the information.
Current Study: PTSD
We are conducting a non-medication study for the treatment of PTSD.
Soon to be enrolling. Currently available sites: western Florida.
Do you have PTSD? Are you interested in being part of a study for its treatment?
Benefits for Volunteers
Studies are something special, because volunteers are helping in the process of finding out important facts. Volunteers also receive real benefits:
- Access to beneficial treatments that may not be otherwise available
- A better understanding of their condition
- Physical examinations and physician visits at no cost
- A part in the increase of worldwide health information — and possibly in the discovery of new or more effective treatments
- A contribution to the advancement of wellbeing for the present and for the future
Ready to see if the PTSD study is right for you?
The first step is simple: complete the volunteer questionnaire.
